HOW MUCH IS REALLY GUARANTEED?

Enter each account you have and the amount held in it. Then press "Add" and it will appear in the list below.

You can choose your banks and building societies from either the "Well-Known Banks" list, or from the "Full List", or both.

As you add more accounts, the calculator will show you whether you have a 100% guarantee across all your savings.

Please note that you can include savings accounts, cash bonds and cash ISAs in this list.

Stocks-and-shares ISAs or SIPPS should not be included here, they are covered by a separate limit at the FSCS.

Bank-Specific Information

Northern Rock

  • Northern Rock is covered by the FSA for the first £35k.
  • Any amount more than this is also 100% guaranteed by the Bank of England and HM Treasury.
  • These guarantee arrangements may change in the future.

NS&I

  • NS&I is not the name of a bank registered with the FSA.
  • It is not therefore covered by the FSA £35k guarantee.
  • Instead, its accounts are backed 100% by HM Treasury.

Smile

  • Smile is not the name of a bank registered with the FSA.
  • It is the name of a bank account offered by the Co-operative Bank plc.

Kaupthing Edge

  • Kaupthing Edge is not the name of a bank registered with the FSA.
  • It is the name of a bank account offered in the UK by Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander Limited.

Notes

  • The amounts in a joint account are split equally between the account-holders.
  • Offset accounts (that is, where the interest on your savings is offset against the interest payable on your mortgage) are handled differently with respect to the compensation payable. Please check with the FSCS for more information about these.
  • Banks such as ING Direct and Icesave are non-UK banks, registered with the FSA as "EEA-Authorised". Please check with the FSCS for more details of what this means.
  • It is important that you use the correct and exact name of the bank which holds your savings. There are some similar-named but different institutions. For example, Capital Bank plc is not the same as Capital One Bank (Europe) plc. If in doubt, check the documentation you have from the company.
  • Looking for the Leeds and Holbeck Building Society? Please read this note.
  • "Yorkshire Bank" no longer has a valid authorisation. Their website states that "Yorkshire Bank" is a trading name of Clydesdale Bank plc; however, this does not appear as a trading name in the FSA Register. Please check with the FSA for more details about their status.
  • Banks registered on the Isle of Man are not generally registered with the FSA. The Isle of Man has its own registration and compensation arrangements.
